  Immigrated to the United States with his father, Johannes, at the age of 4 years old. They arrived in Philadelphia on 5 Sept, 1738 aboard the ship Winter Galley. Mathias and Elizabeth settled in Lincoln Co, North Carolina around 1770s. Later generations moved on to Tennessee and finally settled in Arkansas no later than 1890s (Sidney Monroe). Johann Mathias was born near the Reformed Lutheran Church at Pretzdorf, Oberfranken, Bayern. He was baptised May, 1734. During the 1750s Mathias is listed as a soldier serving in the French and Indian War (1754-63). In 1761, 1762 and 1763 he is listed on the Cumberland Co., Penn. tax list, living in West Pennsbourgh Township. Mathias and his wife are shown attending the Lower Bermudian Lutheran Church in Latimore Township, York Co. In 1772 Mathias and his family moved to what is today Lincoln Co, North Carolina. On Jan 25, 1773 he was granted 300 acres of land. Sold it in 1787 to a Michael Buff.

  [S424] Chronister Family Story, Chronister, Jerry R. and Chronister, Gary A., 3. There are no records found, as yet, as to when Matthias and Elizabeth died, but they sold their farm 8/18/1787 and were living with their son Adam in Lincoln County at the time of the 1790 US Census. It is quite likely that they died prior to 1794 since this is the time that Adam moved away with his wife and son.
