In the 1880 census for Faulkner Co, AR, Cynthian appears as "Synthy", 60 years old, head of household. Her 15 year-old grandson, William Lilly ( born 1865) is living with her. He must be son of Sarah Caroline who married William Lilly...

She appears as "Cyntian" in the 'Applicaton for Letters of Adminstration' settling her estate after her death in 1894. These papers are signed by "Thomas L. McMillen" -- probably a grandson??

That the said Cynthian McMillen died without making any will:

That, to the best of his knowledge and belief, the value of the Estate of the Deceased is about the sum of

Fifty DOLLARS.

That the names and residence of the heirs of deceased is as follows, viz:

I am assuming that Caroline Lilly in the 1880 census is the same person as Sarah Caroline McMillen, eldest daughter of Thomas and Cynthian McMillan as her birthdate and birthplace and the birthplaces of her parents coincide. Also because she and her family are living very near her mother and other brothers and sisters (Isabelle Kuykendall & Horace McMillan) and their respective families.

It would appear that Caroline's eldest son, William, has been sent to live with his grandmother, perhaps to take care of her after the recent death of grandpa Thomas McMillen??

Just a quick note this morning before I leave for the day.  This is what Florence (Gentry) Farmer told to me and this is the way I wrote it down in the 'scant' history I have on the Mercer family.

Savanah's mother died when Savanah was very young. Savanah was always referred to as being an "orphan" although she did have a father. In her younger years, Savanah lived from "pillar to post, " with first one family and then another. At the age of eleven, Savanah went to live with her father.

One morning, Savanah and her father found a baby boy on their door step. The child had been left on the door step some time during the night. They took the baby in and named him Early. Little Early was raised as Savanah's brother. When Savanah and her father were asked why they had named the boy Early, they replied, "Because we found him early in the morning." Early McMillan had a dark complexion and was possibly bi-racial.

In terms of his birth date, this Early McMillan is the most logical of the three listed in the SSDI. Great Grandma Savannah would have been nearly 15 when he arrived. He has, however, moved rather far afield from his native Arkansas. Can this be him?

This Early McMillan is more logical for geographical situation, and his dates are acceptable. Savannah was 18, nearly 19 when he was born. But she married in October 1895, so would not have been at home to help raise him. Perhaps this isn't him.

This one was born too late...
