The 3rd Battalion Mississippi Infantry was formed about November 1861 of seven unattached companies and by the addition of Captain Chariton's Independent Company, Mississippi Infantry, and two companies formed of that part of the 27th Regiment Alabama Infantry which was not captured at Fort Donelson, the batallion was increased to a regiment in April 1862 and called the 33rd Regiment Mississippi Infantry, which designation was changed to the 45th Regiment Mississippin Infantry in November 1862.
