John M. Stone in Heths' Division of the 3rd Army Corps under Lieut Gen. Ambrose P. Hill. When the Civil War ended, Marion Messer was many miles from Mississippi, but was so anxious to get home that he started out on his own walking. When he got home he was barefooted, bareheaded, and had only a few tattered clothes on his back. Marion and his brother Elija (Lige) served in the same company. Marion's wife applied for a Confederate widows pension, which was rejected as he was sent home on leave and never returned.
