----------------------
"The Leverington family has been found to originate in England in or around 1200 ad. There is a town there callee Leverington in the Parish of Wisbeach, Isle of Ely on the Nen River, 99 miles north of London. There are hardly any records at all to go by, though 2 names were mentioned in 1316: Robert, son of John de Leveryng was tenant of the Wisbeach Barton Mannor (2 miles south of Leverington).
At some time the Leveringtons disappeared from this area, but one is believed to have fled to Holland in early 1600's due to persecution under Queen Elizabeth and James I and their Church, for the Leverings were of the Purist or Puritan religion which began in early 1500's and thus at least 1 levering fled to Holland aorund 1607 and 1608. William Bradford and Miles Standish (later Mayflower emigrants) were among those who went to Holland. This band was known as the Scrooby Independents and were under the lead of Rev John Robinson and Elder William Brewster (other Mayflower emigrants) and first went to Amsterdam then to Leyden. When most of this band boarded the Mayflower to America, Levering elected to stay behind. The one known living at that time was Rosier Levering.
[...It was John Wygard Levering and his wife, Magdalena Bokers, who emigrated to America.] John and Magdalena with their first children came to America at the urging of william Penn as he went to Germany to find settlers for Pennsylvania. They came to America on 20 March 1685 and were among the first settlers at Germantown, PA. From there they moved to Roxborough, PA."
